HIKING WITH TREKKING POLES

Picture
Whether you're thru-hiking across the country or heading out on a quick weekend jaunt, trekking poles can add a lot of stability and comfort to your hike. Trekking poles shouldn't be considered essential, but many hikers and backpackers love them for a variety of reasons.

The biggest advantage of hiking with trekking poles is that they absorb some of the shock your joints take when you step - especially on ascents and descents. Trekking poles act as another set of limbs to give you more stability when tackling tricky terrain.
Using trekking poles can get you walking in a smooth rhythm - foot, pole, foot, pole - and can help you sustain a good hiking pace for longer periods of time. Poles can also be used to test ice strength and water depth.

Spending 120 minutes in nature each week is ideal for optimal health and well-being. While getting outside daily could undoubtedly make you feel better, researchers note that the recommended two hours per week doesn’t have to be divvied up evenly. That’s great news for folks who live in urban areas, have limited access to nature, and those with hectic schedules. Whether you venture outdoors one day per week or seven, you’ll reap the rewards.
FOREST THERAPY

Forest bathing and forest therapy (or shinrin-yoku) broadly means taking in, in all of one’s senses, the forest atmosphere. Not simply a walk in the woods, it is the conscious and contemplative practice of being immersed in the sights, sounds and smells of the forest.

Forest bathing isn’t just taking a walk in the woods. And it’s not entirely meditation, It’s about people simply connecting with nature. As you enter the woods – whether that’s a nearby park or a patch of trees in your own backyard – stop for a few quiet moments of deep breathing. Close your eyes, turn your palms forward, and feel the forest around you. It’s okay if your mind wanders, just make a concerted effort to note the smell of the air, any warmth from sunlight streaming through the trees, or any cool breezes against your fingertips.
Amplify the forest’s sounds by using your hands to gently cup your ears forward. Hone in on those sounds – maybe the plop-plop-whoosh of the brook, the rat-a-tat of a woodpecker, or the high-pitched whirring sound that a red squirrel makes. Sniff a clump of damp soil, take a whiff of pine branches, or place your nose on the bark of a tree and inhale. What do certain smells remind you of? Which ones surprise you? Or which ones virtually have no scent at all?
Run your hands over the bark of different trees, rub moss on a tree limb, dip your fingertips in any nearby body of water. Note the differences in the textures – which ones appeal to you more?
Find a bench or simply sit on the ground. Relax and imagine a stream of energy flowing through every element of surrounding nature including you, absorb it, let it heal your body and calm your mind.

HOW TO MINIMIZE THE RISK OF TICK BITES AND INFECTIONS

Apply tick repellent to your skin and clothing, especially your shoes and socks.
Wear long pants and pull your socks over your pant leg.
When you’re out, stay on the trail.
When you come home, make sure you do a thorough tick check, focusing on your thighs, groin area and the back of your head. Then shower.
Put the clothing you wore outside in the dryer at high heat for 10 minutes to kill any ticks that may be hiding.

Deer ticks are commonly found on the thighs/groin, while Dog ticks are most commonly found on the head.
Pets are tick magnets, Since dogs are much less likely to stay on the trail, ticks can hide in long hair and thick fur. Make sure you check your dogs as well and talk to your veterinarian about vaccines and other prevention methods.

MY PERSONAL RECOMMENDATION FOR TICK REPELLENT IS PICARIDIN.
